The cover image for Time's Person of the Year, President-Elect Barack Obama, was not an official photograph, but a newer (smiling) version of Shepard Fairey's now-ersatz official and decidedly ubiquitous portrait, which has been elevated to icon status. What other images have this distinction? I can think of Milton Glaser's Dylan, Avedon's Beatles, as well as portraits of Mao, Marilyn, and Che. Can you think of other portraits--drawn, painted, or photographed--with as much pictorial recognition? Let me know what you think in the comments!
