Live Long and Prosper
Posted by Steve

As an antidote to Rudy Guiliani's painfully smug speech at the Republican National Convention last night, I started thinking about Star Trek's Mr. Spock, which caused me to conjure the Vulcan hand sign for "Live Long and Prosper" (one of the most venerated sayings in popular culture). Did you know that the actor Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock, created the extraterrestrial sign of hope based on a Jewish cemetery symbol?
On old European Jewish tombstones, a carving that shows two hands arranged for the Priestly Blessing (see above) is the symbol of the Kohen. Kohanim are the direct male descendants of Aaron, who was the first Kohen and the brother of Moses. Today, if one is so inclined, it is possible to trace a priestly lineage from the tombstones that bear this symbol, which, if you follow the logic, gives new resonance to Mel Brooks' classic Jews in Space. It certainly takes one's mind off Guiliani.

Too bad you can't stay non-partisan. You just lost me as a reader.

I really enjoyed Rudy Guiliani's delightful speach. It may have been painfully smug for you, but not for millions of others like me. The fact that Obama voted "present" 133 times doesn't even interest you.

I can't imagine Obama having to deal with Russia invading another former slave state early on in his presidency. He is unprepared and ill equiped to make on the spot decisions. I think your ridicule of Guiliani is a little smug.

Two postscripts:

1. Thanks to Rick Meyerowitz for pointing out that I mistook MR. Spock, the Vulcan, for Dr. Spock, the baby doctor and social activist. Correction noted.

2. Ken, partisanship in an election year is unavoidable, as we have seen in these two conventions. This is not a political blog, but political views will emerge from time to time. As for the former mayor, Jean, you are correct I was being smug. And two smugs don't make a right.

Ken,
Okay, I get it. You're ticked that this blog was used as an outlet for Steve's own political viewpoint. Great. Make your point. But don't just walk away. Stick around and let yourself be heard.

I'm reminded of something in history... Mmmmm... let me think...
Oh yea, something about Christians.... Dark Ages...... Got it, the Christians didn't like what was going on so they decided, in their infinite wisdom, that the best thing to do would be to remove themselves from society - to walk out - and stay behind big stone walls. That worked out really well for them, right?

Seriously Ken, disagree - I do too - but please don't just get upset and go behind stone walls. Stay. Disagree. State your opinion. Be heard.

Why is everyone getting so riled because Steven has a differing opinion than their own? That's what makes our world interesting. (I'm a gentile, but oy vey!)

And it seems that some are missing the humor in this post. Spock and Judaism? That's a fascinating little find there Steven... and funny as all heck.

Steven... care to comment on the Star Trek episodes about the Tribbles or the Green Chick? (my faves)

It's Mr. Spock, not Dr. Spock. One word typo, but a huge difference. I doubt Dr. Spock can do a Vulcan neck pinch, but can probably change a diaper faster than anyone!

According to Leonard Nimoy, the actor who portrays Mr. Spock, the symbol is a "J" in Hebrew that stands for Jehova. And isn't it cool that Mr. Spock made up the symbol himself? (By the way, he also came up with the Vulcan neck pinch, arguing with the director that Spock would never resort to pure violence.)

Also little known fact, William Shatner (Kirk) is also Jewish.

I would like to correct your language in saying that Spock took his symbol directly from tombstones. The priestly hand symbol used on tombstones is referencing what the Kohanim actually performed in Temple times. The tradition of specific blessings performed by men of the Kohen linage is still followed until today. Furthermore, having a picture of the hand symbol on one's tombstone does not mean they are a kohen. It follows the father to son lineage which is why scientists have figured out the kohen gene through the Y chromosome.

I don't mind partisanship. Everyone has a bias. I have watched hours of both parties' convention coverage. Sometimes it is hard to take, especially this week.

But Star Trek references I simply can't abide!

Seriously, I don't know if you've mentioned this in the past, but I am struck by the proliferation of "handmade" signs in the audience at the Republican party, and how incongruous they look. Who is making these? I mean, I know it's the campaign. But is it a specific staff contingent, armed with poster paint and brushes? Weird wacky stuff.

I agree about the handmade posters all over the place. I was equally annoyed - but then that happens quite often when I see things that should be better.

I'm thinking these people should hire a designer - I'm available for hire :) - and get some real posters in the audience. Maybe we could work on some sort of Mr Spock rendition in honor of Steven's little blog here.
